The aim of a psychological assessment is to identify a child's current level of functioning and indicate what actions will build on their strengths and address any areas of concern. Both parents and teachers will benefit from the comprehensive report that accompanies each assessment. Included are simple and practical strategies that are designed to increase a child’s confidence and skills.

Assessments can take place at your child’s school or privately at one of our offices. The assessments used will depend on the reason for the referral and may include tests of intelligence and/or behavioural assessments.

A typical assessment might include the following tests:

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (WISC-IV)
The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) is used to test the general thinking and reasoning skills of children aged 6 to 16 years. This test has five main scores: Verbal Comprehension score, Perceptual Reasoning score, Working Memory score, Processing Speed score, and Full Scale IQ score. 

By evaluating a child’s score on each of these measures we are able to ascertain where their individual strengths lie and identify specific support needs. Using the full-scale IQ score from the WISC-IV it is possible to predict the level at which a child should be performing according to his/her ability. 

The WISC-IV takes approximately 1.5 hours to administer.

The Child Behaviour Checklist
The Child Behaviour Checklist is a highly regarded comprehensive diagnostic tool for children aged 6 to 18 years. It encompasses reports from both parents and teachers to indicate a child’s adaptive functioning and academic performance. It can point to a range of behavioural and emotional problems such as:

Anxiety / depression
Attention problems
Social difficulties
Rule-breaking Behaviour
Thought Problems
Somatic complaints
